Saturday the 7th of November saw the people of Lakemba come out in droves for the Lakemba Environment Day! Lakemba Community Garden constructed in 2011, was filled with smiles from all ages with tour guides showcasing its beauty. The support and enjoyment of the community thrived in the regular chatting ground for mums in the area.
It was the perfect place to meet new and familiar faces and would not have been complete without the consumption of a delicious sausage sizzle. A sense of community developed instantly, proving how gardening together can break down barriers and allow residents to learn from each other. It was a delight to hear tips and tricks on gardening and minimizing waste exchanged to work towards a more sustainable future.
The royal “King and Queen” of waste kept the crowds entertained with their fabulous show that had the kids of Lakemba singing and playing games whilst learning about recycling. The Mums and Dads even learnt a bit as well. Everyone was able to learn more about growing their own vegies, composting, saving seeds and easy care gardening.
The City of Canterbury attended the event and had people of all ages complete their Ready Set Recycle survey. Survey entrants were able to win daily prizes at the event and also went in the major prize draw to win 1 in 5 Go Pro’s and 1 in 5 Weber BBQ’s.
